Dave Peters

June 26, 2011

I received a tribute from Producer Aubrey Phillips today, with regard to our recent news that Comedian Dave Peters had sadly died. This is what Aubrey has to say:

Dave first worked for me in the early sixties in pantomime at the Empire Theatre, Gateshead. It was the standard old fashioned contract which stated “Act as Known” £18.00 per week and no rehearsal pay. I teamed him as Ugly with Ronne Coyles, Dave then did ten more consecutive years for me as Ugly Sister.

He also appeared for me often in Rep at the Victoria Theatre, Salford, excelling as “Timothy” in Salad Days. It was during one repertory season that he met his longtime companion Jimmy Garrett and moved to the Salesbury Hotel, Blackpool which they ran and Dave appeared in cabaret at.

Summer seasons included eight consecutive seasons at The Gaiety Theatre, Rhyl as the  top of the bill principal comedian; and several seasons at The Floral Pavilion Theatre, New Brighton.

I often worked with Dave as part of a double act in Music Hall appearing as “Two Vicars” or “The Chelsea Pensioners” where we always departed from the script, just having one cue that we used to finish the spot.

Dave played “Muddles” for me on the road in my production of “Snow White” (The World’s Longest Running Touring Pantomime) from 1968 until the late nineties. Virtually every number one touring venue was played – many on more than one occasion, plus a short season at the Victoria Palace in London’s West End.

Sadly I lost touch with Dave during the last few years of his life when he moved to Bridlington. Not being a car driver, he then tended to play the venues in easy access to his new home town. I miss him very much but have a lifetime of happy memories of working with him.

Aubrey Phillips.
