Antiques Roadtrip!

June 27, 2014

roadtrip trio

A very jolly day spent in the company of Chris Biggins and Mark Stacey, as I joined them on a leg of their Celebrity Antiques Roadshow!

Chris and Mark were on a side trip from buying antiques to browse through a tiny part of the Its Behind You archive. On route from Sawbridgeworth they left fellow competitor Lesley Joseph touring the Rothschild Mansion as they headed for me and the Kenneth More Theatre.

I seem to have been following Chris on the panto circuit of late- He played Wolverhampton, I followed him in the next year, and now this season I’ll be in “Aladdin” at the New Theatre Hull where Biggins topped the bill last year in “Jack And The Beanstalk”.

Following Chris Biggins around the panto circuit is very handy for me, as in each case Chris has sorted out the hotels for me- they have the Biggins seal of approval!

Today was a lovely opportunity not just to catch up on all things panto Dame, but to bring along a few treasures from the vaults. We looked at some items from as far back as 1822, and then some photographs and programmes from Drury Lane and Dan Leno, before moving on to one of my favourite panto possessions, my Cora Goffin Doll. (Take a look in articles under The Impressarios and Emile Littler for the full story!)

We dressed up the KMTheatre’s wardrobe as a museum for the day, and some of my Dame frocks and wigs made a guest appearance. Chris and I were discussing how many pantomimes we’ve done- collectively I think we make Eighty! This year marks my fortieth pantomime- and there’s life in the old girl yet!

This year Chris will be appearing alongside “The Hoff” at Southend, just down the road- just like Baywatch really only a bit chilly!

Here are a few pictures from a recent Panto Chris was in, along with the amazing Paul Zerdin. (and Sam!)

We spent a good few hours looking at some of the archive, and talking about how pantomime has changed since “Joey” Grimaldi was appearing at Sadler’s Wells and Drury Lane in the 1800’s.

It was great to meet Mark Stacey too. A very lovely man-He seemed the perfect choice to be inducted into the school of Dames, so Chris and I ended the shoot by transforming him into a fellow Panto Star. Watch this space- you might be saying him in panto one year- you mark my words!

Pretty soon it was Pumpkin time, and Chris and Mark headed off in the classic car for Buckinghamshire, to join Lesley on the next leg of the Antiques Roadtrip. We had a lot of laughs today- and I think it will be shown on the BBC sometime around November, by which time we’ll be well into Panto rehearsals. Thanks to these two guys and to the crew for a fun day in Pantoland!
